Possessed is an American death metal band San Francisco, California, originally formed in 1983. Noted for their fast style of playing and Becerra's guttural vocals, they have been cited as a great influence on the death metal genre. In fact, the band's influence on the genre is so great, they are sometimes called the "godfathers" of the death metal genre and are often considered the first death metal group, with the name of the genre possibly coming from their first demo entitled Death Metal.
After breaking up in 1987, and briefly reforming in 1993, the band reformed under original bassist/vocalist Jeff Becerra in 2007.

In high school, back when we would hang out and spin albums for each other, turning our friends on to new, cool music, I recall my friend Eric playing Seven Churches for me and holding the pure-satan album cover and their version of Oldfield's Tubular Bells merging menacingly into the guitar feedback and then the first chord of this new thing called death metal. Those savage buzzbone guitar, Becerra chewing the microphone to death, the blastbeat artillery rhythm, the mindnumbing math guitar solos. Absolutely amazing band.
I saw them perform this album live at L'Amours in Brooklyn, tripping balls on mesc (hey, I can't lie-but don't try that yourselves, kiddies). Rest assured I didn't need the double-barrel purple to appreciate one of the great genre-defining bands of death metal. To have heard and seen Burning In Hell live was a singular pleasure, straight, stoned or otherwise. Great post of a truly original band. Thanks....
